Antagonist Dragonspit: Virginia‑Based Emcee & Producer Blazing Underground Hip‑Hop Trails

Welcome to Hells Gates

Antagonist Dragonspit (also known as Dragonspit Jones) is a seasoned emcee, beat‑maker, and drummer hailing from the Hampton Roads region of Virginia (7 City/Tidewater).

He ended up on my Spotify playlist and found myself being pulled back to this song over and over. He is also very chill and responded to my messages on insta and was very humble. When I first listened he had less than 300 followers on Spotify he now has over 1000 in just a couple of weeks.

Over the past 15+ years, he’s navigated the independent hip‑hop scene with gritty lyricism, raw boom‑bap production, and an unwavering DIY ethos.

🎙️ Origins & Style

  • Described in RVA Magazine as an “absolute disdain for the current ‘Turnt Up’ state of Hip‑Hop,” his Ugly Truth LP (2014) revisits 1990s‑era beats with razor‑sharp lyricism and no-nonsense social commentary  .
  • He merges roles as both MC and producer—on tracks like “On a Mission” from Back On The Map (2011), Dragonspit delivers introspective bars over heads‑nodding boom‑bap from Disko Dave.
You can immediately hear his influences like WU Tang and others. But what I love the most about Dragonspit Jones is even though he has disdain for new rap he is all about a new consciousness in rap where rappers take accountability and do not try to be one person the rapper and one person the man. His instagram heading proclaims Husband and father. Now that is some rap shit I can get behind.

He is not just dragonspitting, he is the embodiment of a rapper on a prolific unfettered, non-whitewashed, conscious minded path making no excuses and honing his craft his own way.
He is on a journey of being and feeling whole, and what an amazing thing to pass onto future generations. I feel rappers like Dragonspit Jones are even more important than the Kendricks and the Drake's because they are regular people living their dreams and don't need hype and to be center stage to do that very thing. They are happy being themselves and don't need to be provoking the mainstream to do what they are on this planet to do, raise awareness and thought. That is why I chose this song as my song of the week, and why anyone who loves rap on any level can hear the gritty amazing lyricism and cadence in his work. If your going to get spit on, I say get Dragonspit on, and support a rapper worthy of support, and recognition because he is a decent man as well as creative rapper.

🥁 Prolific Output

  • Back On The Map LP (2011): Early statement of purpose, underpinned by gritty lyricism and tracks like “Betta Than This”  .
  • The Ugly Truth LP (and its sequel): Reinforces his role as truth‑teller and boom‑bap purist  .
  • Beat tapes: The Wreckage series (2019), Zone Out Beat Tape Side 2 (2023) showcase his raw, sample‑chopped production and vintage MPC‑style drums  .
  • Collaborations: 2023’s Man on Fire album with Ray Major features sharp bars and tight production, including guest spot Rakita Lavon

🛠️ Behind the Boards

  • Produced for Virginia artists and beyond: a 2024 remake of Wu‑Syndicate’s “Grimlenz” (original boom‑bap duo from Virginia) highlights his beat revival skills  .
  • His beat tapes emphasize hand‑chopped samples, live MPC vibes, and warm analog textures—keeping the essence of the golden era alive.

🔥 Why He Matters

  1. Lyric‑First Focus
Tracks like “Soul Clean” (2011) blend gospel‑rap introspection with street candidness—“Gotta get right, gotta get my soul clean”  .
  2. DIY Instrumentation
Self‑produced, mixed, and often recorded from his home studio (“The Dragon’s Lair”), his work exemplifies true independent artistry.
  3. Regional Representation As a stalwart of Virginia’s underground scene, Dragonspit attracts local praise and national recognition—often staying ahead of the mainstream curve.
If you love new music but the authenticity of the originators in rap you have to hear Dragonspit Jones. His name moved me so much I created a new anime/comic book character named Destra Dragonspit. Her superpower is to use her amazing voice and ability to speak any language to calm nations and to help people communicate with her focus on discourse and diplomacy. She was sent by her planet to learn how to grow every plant on planet earth. The only issue is, in order for her to learn this she must have everyone get along and there must be full equality and egalitarianism on earth to complete her mission. She must conquer equality first, then create a huge database full of all plant species and how they grow, this is her planet Cyclic’s only hope to not destruct due to lack of plant cleansing and oxygen imperative to continue to thrive as a species. Stay tuned for more as it will be on my Patreon Healing for you podcast monthly content subscription.

There is nothing like supporting and being influenced in whole ways by an amazing underground rapper. So lets hail Antagonist Dragonspit for his unwavering rap style, dedication to his craft and the underground rap scene and his amazing lyrics making his name Dragonspit Jones so fitting and a perfect way to describe his raw lyrics. So if you need an amazing new song of the week you must check out Antagonist Dragonspit!
